Mathematics for Economics – I | Eco. Hons. | Rajasthan University

Welcome to Mathematics for Economics – I, a comprehensive course designed for Economics Honours students of Rajasthan University. This course covers the mathematical concepts and techniques essential for understanding economics, with a focus on building strong conceptual foundations and developing problem-solving skills.
One of the biggest advantages of this course is its lifetime validity. Mathematics is a subject in which concepts learned today can be useful throughout your academic journey. Suppose you are studying in the second semester or a later semester and find it difficult to understand differentiation, integration, partial derivatives, or other mathematical concepts. You can return to this course, revisit the relevant recorded lectures, and strengthen your understanding whenever you need to. This course can also serve as a valuable resource for students preparing for CUET-PG, UGC NET Economics, MA Economics entrance examinations, RBI Grade B, and other competitive examinations that require a strong foundation in mathematical concepts. Whether you want to clear a doubt, revise the basics before an examination, or practise important concepts again after months or years, you can revisit the lectures at your convenience. Instead of treating Mathematics as a subject to study only for one semester, make this course a long-term learning resource that supports your academic growth and examination preparation. Purchase once and revisit the concepts whenever you need them, with lifetime course validity.
The course covers Sets, Relations and Functions, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Matrix Algebra and Determinants, along with important applications in Economics. The syllabus is organised into four units to help you study systematically and prepare effectively for your examinations.

Mathematics for Economics – Basics
Mathematics is the language of modern economics, yet many students find it intimidating. This course is designed to change that. Mathematics for Economics – Basics explains the essential mathematical tools every economics student needs, in simple, clear, step-by-step language, with no prior advanced knowledge required.
Each concept is built from the ground up and connected to how it is actually used in economic analysis, whether it’s finding marginal cost and marginal revenue, optimizing profit, calculating consumer surplus, or solving systems of equations in market models.
What you will learn

Set Theory: Sets, operations on sets, and Venn diagrams

Relations and Functions: Types of relations and functions, and how economic variables relate to each other

Permutation and Combination: Counting techniques and their applications

Differentiation: Rules of derivatives, rates of change, and applications such as marginal analysis and optimization

Integration: Basic techniques of integration and applications such as total cost, total revenue, and consumer and producer surplus

Matrices and Determinants: Matrix operations, determinants, inverse of a matrix, and solving linear equations
